Panattoni has created a new site for Microvast GmbH that is designed for the long term and that offers prospects for the future thanks to its location close to the many research and education institutions in the greater Berlin area. The challenge: Adapting a classic logistics facility to the requirements for producing modern lithium-ion batteries and relocating the headquarters from Frankfurt to Berlin.

The BTS project in Ludwigsfelde in the Berlin metropolitan region serves as the European hub and production location for Microvast GmbH, a supplier of energy storage system solutions.

The facility developed by Panattoni in Ludwigsfelde, Berlin – which combines production and business activities under one roof – is proof that a classic logistics facility can do more.

Starting point

Microvast needed the combination of a production plant and office spaces that would serve as the new European headquarters. The facility was to meet the complex requirements for producing lithium-ion batteries and also accommodate the management division. The needs of staff were put squarely in the spotlight during development of the spaces and plant and were incorporated into planning work. The aim was to create a new site for Microvast that embodies the company’s values: modern, dynamic, global and sustainable.

Solution

The classic logistics facility was reinvented and transformed into a production facility that has provided space for up to 250 staff from the Strategy, Business Development and Service departments since spring 2021. The new headquarters have been designed so that Microvast can expand them at any time. Microvast went public in August 2021 and is listed on NASDAQ.

Sustainability

The building has been awarded DNGB Gold Standard from the German Sustainable Building Council and boasts excellent public transport links. Microvast staff will therefore find it easier to cut back on commuting to work by car in order to reduce their personal carbon footprint. In addition, several e-charging columns have been installed in the staff and visitor car parks. The site in Ludwigsfelde now produces large quantities of lithium-ion batteries for electrically operated commercial vehicles such as buses that can cover a range of 300 to 400 km.

Panattoni is building a new, state-of-the-art facility at the Gügling industrial park in Schwäbisch Gmünd for the freight forwarding and logistics company, Brucker GmbH from Aalen. The industrial property, which is in an excellent location with respect to infrastructure, will be built on a 47,000 m² Brownfield. Panattoni applies the highest sustainability standards when constructing its projects. From Q1 2024, Brucker GmbH will use the modern building to further expand its contract-based logistics.

CASE STUDY

Panattoni has completed a new building for the international logistics service provider Yusen Logistics in Sittensen, Lower Saxony, in a very short space of time. The real estate developer constructed the facility, built to the highest sustainability standards, on a brownfield site.
