Currently, the largest Czech large-scale mural art is being created on the facade of a giant distribution centre in the Panattoni Park Cheb industrial zone. The building, which is currently under construction, will cover an area of 6,200 square metres. The mural, featuring the Cheb skyline, was created by street art artist Dmitry Proshkin, known as ChemiS. The original design came from the PROJEKTSTUDIO architectural studio and its implementation is gradually coming to an end.
"As a rule, the architecture of industrial halls meets the requirements of functionality and sustainability. I am really glad that in the case of the mural in Panattoni Park Cheb we are succeeding in breaking down stereotypes in this respect. The project of a distribution centre for a leading global brand will thus become exceptional not only in its scale and the technologies used, but also in the appearance of the facade, " says Klára Sobotková, Regional Development Director at Panattoni.
One of the walls of a distribution centre being built for a global fashion chain became an imaginary canvas for the Cheb mural art. The total area of this project exceeds a record 200 thousand square meters. The length of the main facade is 700 metres and the height of the mural reaches 15 metres. Spray paint in eight different shades was used for its realisation.
"We are pleased that the industrial park in Cheb is able to attract established companies of global importance to the region, offering hundreds of new jobs. The fact that it has finally become a place for an original work of art, which may even attract visitors from the public, is an excellent bonus. The silhouette of Cheb's beautiful historic centre certainly deserves a similar immortalisation and thanks to the mural art it is on display for all those passing by, " said Jan Vrba, Mayor of Cheb.
Considering the size of the distribution centre, the authors of the painting's design aimed to come up with a theme that would catch the eye at first glance, but at the same time would not look aggressive or give the impression of strictly repetitive elements. "The reliefs on the façade refer to specific buildings standing in the centre of Cheb, mostly on its main square. The intention was that locals who know Cheb well would find their favourite buildings here. It is also a kind of an inside joke between local people and others who are just passing by and do not recognize that they have the historical buildings of Cheb in front of them," said Lucie Parks, the author of the design from PROJEKTSTUDIO architectural studio.
The mural takes several months to complete
The mural art itself took several months to complete. According to its author, it is many times longer than usual, which is due to the large scale of the entire mural. For example, a mural by the same artist covering a sprinkler plant in the nearby Panattoni Park Cheb South industrial estate was completed in less than three weeks.
In the first phase of the work, the facade is washed, oriented and taped to avoid overspray in areas that must remain clean. "Accurate targeting of the design to the area is key. Fortunately, this façade is made up of regular panels, so we had some clues. Otherwise, though, our work really looks like we each have a tape measure, pencil and a level, and we sketch by hand, so we have to be very careful, " says the ChemiS contractor, describing the teamwork involved in creating the mural art, which is his fifth for Panaattoni Parks.
ChemiS has created dozens of murals around the world. He came to wider awareness of the domestic public, for example, by depicting a crying President Masaryk or a Ukrainian girl in a Kharkov bunker on a house in Prague's Nusle district. In addition to mural art in Panattoni Park Cheb, ChemiS has also created murals in Panattoni Park Stříbro, Panattoni Park D5 Hořovice, Brno Airport and Panattoni Park Cheb South. In the case of Brno, the design of the artwork came out of a competition for young creative artists.
Records in the Czech Republic and in the world
The largest domestic mural art to date was located on an industrial hall near the Václav Havel Airport. The large-format mural entitled Cosmos covers an area of over 5,200 square metres. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world's largest mural is located on several grain silos in the South Korean city of Incheon, west of Seoul, and spans over 23,600 square metres. Also unique is a mural in the Canadian city of Calgary, which stands 95 metres high, making it the world's tallest mural.
